Digital Detox: the phone is meant for talking

It’s that time again. Feeling overstimulated by the world of cell phones + computer screens, my physical + mental fatigue have taken over, and my focus has left the building. It’s time to step back from the incessant speed of life.
Lucky enough, I caught this before spiraling out into a bipolar episode. I have felt it brewing these past weeks, with emotional dysregulation, depressive thoughts and the dance of hypomanic bursts. I’m stepping away for a bit to recalibrate, taking a self-retreat to tend to the spirit: silence, yoga and meditation, slowing down to smooth out my being.
I’ve decided to keep my phone on during this time, to be used as it’s meant: to dial a number and call someone to talk to them. The live human voice is so much more capable of soothing the soul than typing words on a screen. Texting just doesn’t feel the way speaking does. The human voice physically resonates and has the capacity to help regulate another nervous system. On the other hand, communicating via text message can often increase anxiety and the feeling of disconnection, and can even dysregulate a nervous system.
So, social media, email, computer screens and phone texting are on pause for the week. A digital detox is healthy - It saves me from distorting the view of my own life, every time.
